The Moment That Changed Everything

It was just a normal evening. My partner and I were looking forward to a cozy night on the couch, enjoying our favorite meal – delicious shawarma, fresh tabbouleh, and creamy hummus.

We got comfortable, savoring every bite, while our little one wandered around us, curiously nibbling at bits of our food. A taste here, a bite there – she loved exploring new flavors.

Then, suddenly, everything changed.

A cough. Then redness on her skin, swollen lips – and then difficulty breathing. Within minutes, the situation escalated – anaphylaxis.

Emergency call, ambulance, flashing blue lights, hospital.

Then, silence. Shock. Mental paralysis. Oh no.

She barely made it through safely and will likely forget about it as she grows up.
She will. We, as parents, won’t. Not at all.

And for good reason. Anaphylaxis can occur at any time, without warning.
The more people know how to act quickly and correctly, the more lives can be saved. That is our mission.

Back then, we didn’t know our child had a severe allergy.
Today, she has several. We are always prepared – and we want to share our experience so that other parents and caregivers can react more quickly and confidently.

In this article, we explain what anaphylaxis is, how it develops, and why acting fast is crucial.DALL·E 2025-02-13 15.00.24 - A cozy family evening scene with a mother, father, and child sitting together on the couch, enjoying a meal while watching TV. The coffee table holds

What Exactly is Anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of an allergic reaction.
The immune system overreacts to a normally harmless substance, triggering a chain reaction that can become life-threatening within minutes.

🚨 Key Facts About Anaphylaxis:

  • It can occur suddenly & without warning.
  • Even tiny amounts of an allergen can be enough.
  • Symptoms often involve multiple organ systems at once (skin, airways, circulatory system, digestive system).
  • Biphasic reactions are possible – a second wave of symptoms may appear hours after the first.

Why Does the Body React So Extremely?

Normally, the immune system protects us from harmful invaders like viruses or bacteria.
In anaphylaxis, this defense mechanism spirals out of control.

What happens in the body:
1️⃣ The immune system mistakenly identifies a harmless allergen as a threat.
2️⃣ Massive amounts of histamine are released.
3️⃣ Blood vessels widen drastically → Fluids leak into tissues, causing swelling.
4️⃣ Airways may constrict, blood pressure drops → Circulatory collapse & shock become imminent.

How is Anaphylaxis Different from a "Normal" Allergy?

Many people associate allergies with hay fever or skin rashes.
However, anaphylaxis is far more severe.

Allergy 🟢 Anaphylaxis 🔴
Itchy eyes, sneezing Swelling in the throat, difficulty breathing
Localized skin reactions Circulatory problems, unconsciousness
Symptoms are often mild Potentially life-threatening
Symptoms fade over time Immediate emergency response required

Emergency Measures – How to React Correctly

That evening, there was no time for doubt or hesitation. We had to act immediately.

🚑 Correct order of emergency actions:

1️⃣ Administer an epinephrine auto-injector (e.g., EpiPen) immediately into the thigh muscle.
2️⃣ Call emergency services (112/911) – state "Anaphylaxis emergency!"
3️⃣ Lay the person down (except in case of breathing difficulties → keep them upright).
4️⃣ Administer antihistamines & corticosteroids (if prescribed).
5️⃣ Monitor – if symptoms do not improve, a second epinephrine dose should be given (if available).

💡 If a second epinephrine dose is available, it should be administered after 5 minutes if symptoms do not improve.
Since many patients only carry one EpiPen, calling 112 or 911 early is even more important.

Biphasic Reactions – Why Monitoring Is So Important

Anaphylaxis can strike again.
Many believe that once the initial symptoms subside, the danger is over – but that is not always the case.

🛑 Why does this happen?

  • After an initial reaction, inflammatory chemicals may still be circulating in the body.
  • This can trigger a second wave of symptoms hours later.

💡 That’s why monitoring is crucial:
Stay in the hospital for at least 6–12 hours.
Even after apparent recovery, remain vigilant.

How We Learned to Live with This Fear

After that night, our daily lives changed.
We suddenly had to navigate a world we had never thought about before.

➡️ Which foods contain hidden allergens?
➡️ How do we recognize the first warning signs early?
➡️ How do we educate others on how to respond in an emergency?

Suddenly, our daily conversations revolved around food labels, emergency plans, and whether our child was truly safe at daycare.

It was overwhelming.
But we learned that knowledge and preparation make the biggest difference.

What Every Parent Should Know – Our Key Takeaways

Know the early symptoms!
Recognizing the first signs can save lives.

ALWAYS carry emergency medication!
An epinephrine auto-injector is the most crucial tool in an anaphylaxis emergency.

Practice using the emergency kit!
Only those who have used it before will feel confident in an emergency.

Inform your environment!
Relatives, caregivers & teachers need to know how to respond.

Organize your emergency equipment properly!
Disorganized bags waste valuable seconds – everything must be within reach.

🎒 That’s why we developed ANA AID together – a well-organized emergency bag that contains everything needed in a crisis.

✔️ Structured compartments for medication
✔️ A small comfort plush toy
✔️ A slot for a photo of loved ones – because emotional security matters too

Because preparation provides safety – and safety saves lives.

Conclusion – Knowledge Alone Is Not Enough, We Must Be Prepared!

Anaphylaxis can be sudden & severe – but with the right knowledge, it becomes less terrifying.

We’ve learned:
🛑 An emergency is not the moment to figure out what to do for the first time.

➡️ That’s why we share our experience.
➡️ That’s why we advocate for better education.
➡️ That’s why we develope ANA AID – for more security in everyday life.
